These drabbles were written in
response to the 2006 Tracy Island Writers Forum's Drabble
Challenge. The
challenge was as follows:
Choose three of the following
six topics and write one drabble for each of the topics you
chose. You will wind up with three 100-word drabbles on
whichever three topics you chose. Here are your choices:
A)
Scott during a rescue (could be his thoughts, someone
observing him, something he's actually doing, etc.).
B)
Virgil while playing the piano (again, could be his thoughts,
someone observing/listening, etc.).
C)
Gordon's and Alan's relationship as brothers (one or both of
them thinking about it, one of them thinking about the other,
someone else ruminating on their relationship, etc.).
D)
Lady Penelope (either her thoughts or someone else's about
her/what she does, etc.).
E)
The Thunderbirds (perhaps the ship's actual POV or someone's
thoughts about one or all of them, etc.).
F)
Parody drabble (anything goes, parody style).

One
A) Scott during a rescue (could be his thoughts, someone
observing him, something he's actually doing, etc.).
I watch as
the flames engulf the building. Dense, grey smoke chokes the
atmosphere, coughing out ash and dirt everywhere. White-hot
flames rage on, the heat deadly. Hovering above the
catastrophe I breathe a sigh of relief. It was close this
time, but with determination (and some of Lady Luck's
blessing) we made it out safely.
Through
Thunderbird One's hatch I scan across the blue ocean of
sky at my brother's ship. Though I can't see him, I know
Virgil is watching the same scene with relief. I smile to
myself – another success for International Rescue, and the
Tracy family.

B) Virgil while playing the piano (again, could be his
thoughts, someone observing/listening , etc.).
"Al,
you're not supposed to do that!"
"What? I
only tightened one of the strings."
"Yeah, but
now you've thrown all the tuning out!"
"But I
loosened it again. It sounds right to – "
"Quick!
He's coming! Hide!"
A pause. A
soft, light melody begins to play.
"Sounds
like Beethoven."
"Gords,
does that particular piece use middle C?"
Plonk!
"Ouch! I
guess it does."
"Gordon!
Alan!"
"Why's it
always my name shouted first?"
"Because
it's usually your idea! Run for it!"
"You know
something, Al? I never knew Beethoven's 'Pathétique' had
lyrics."
"I didn't
know Virgil knew such bad language!"

C) Gordon's and Alan's relationship as brothers (one or both
of them thinking about it, one of them thinking about the
other, someone else ruminating on their relationship, etc.).
My
brother, Gordon Tracy. What can I say about him?
He dyed my
hair blue, the night before my high school prom.
He put
glue on my cell phone.
He
switched my toothpaste for hand cream.
He put a
goldfish in Scott's bathtub (that was a good prank).
He wrote
"Fragile: This Way Up" on the side of Thunderbird Three.
In pink.
In
permanent marker.
He sent me
a Father's Day card, pretending it was from one of my old
girlfriends.
What can I
say? Gordon is the biggest jackass this side of the planet.
But he's
my brother. |
